I've now seen this issue with 2 different DNN sites I'm working on, and on the older site it simply caused me not to use Minimal Extropy; but I'd like to use the skin on my new site if I can.

On both these sites, I'm dealing with a logo GIF which is larger than Minimal Extropy expects, and extends downward over the menu bar.  One logo is 260 x 169 pixels, and the other is 375 x 146 pixels.  This entirely prevents any access to that part of the menu bar; in order to work again I had to delete the GIF from the portal and then open the site in another browser.  Is there some way to tell Minimal Extropy to move the menu bar lower to accomodate a vertically larger logo?  Alternatively, is there some document somewhere that tells me what is the maximum vertical dimension Minimal Extropy will accept in a logo GIF?  Both these sites are for nonprofits, and on the older site we'd have to pay for a logo redesign; I think on the new site I could get the logo redone for free if I know what the size limits are.  I see that the DNN logo is 367 x 100 pixels; is 100 pixels the maximum vertical dimension?

I'm open to suggestion - is there another skin that's more forgiving of logo size?

My second issue with Minimal Extropy on my newer site is that the color scheme of the new site is orange and black (don't blame me, I'm not the graphic designer), and it looks flaming awful with the pale blue and red in Minimal Extropy.  Is there a version of Minimal Extropy somewhere in grayscale instead of color?

I'm so proud of myself - I figured out how to override the side of the logo_pad, using the portal .CSS!  But I still have an issue with the colors in Minimal Extropy.  Guess I'll keep looking for other skins.

I'm not certain if the open source license allows it, but you could simply recolor the graphics of the skin yourself and resave them into a new version to use with the orange and black color scheme site.

As for the logo issue, I don't know specifically the classes that determine the height or the setup of the div's there, but using IE Developer Toolbar or Firebug in Firefox would allow you to figure out the classes and understand the structure better, and help narrow down what you'd need to edit in order to allow for a larger height logo.  There's really no reason to not allow for a different sized logo in a skin design, whether it's div/css based or table based.

You can use the stylesheet editor on the Admin->Site Settings page, but I generally don't.  I tend to create a custom skin and edit the source of the css directly in the skin.css and container.css files of the skin and containers.  It's easier to have a backup copy or create a skin that can easily be deployed on any portal via normal skin installation without keeping track of edits to the Portal.css.  Some people prefer to edit the portal css, but you'd need to watch any edits to the portal.css file since they may get overwritten when upgrading DNN, something you wouldn't need to worry about with a skin as long as the skin is named something other than Minimal Extropy as that skin might get overwritten in an upgrade as well... a skin with a custom name is the best way to avoid any issues with upgrades to the DNN core.

Rick,

I'm thinking about recoloring the skin but not for the orange and black site - I found a free greyscale skin called "Greytness" (?!) at Snowcovered, from Adammer LLC, which is pretty good, and the client likes the look.  But I have another site where the logo is in a medium purple and shades of lavender, and the color scheme of Minimal Extropy simply Will Not Do for that.

I thought the open source license let you play with whatever you like, as long as you don't try to sell it.  I'll keep your suggestion in mind of a custom skin with its own name, you're perfectly right about upgrades.  I actually like the general look of Minimal Extropy, but the colors are really restrictive.  Or, I may use Greytness for the purple site too - it has a much broader arrangement of internal panes than M. E. and I think a greyscale skin would work there.

I don't use Firebug but I have the Web Developer toolbar in FireFox, and it led me straight to a DIV called .logo_pad with a height of 100 px, in the skin.css - I changed it to my needed height (override in the portal.css, just for experiment sake) and voila!

DNN has an MIT license and allows you almost anything; http://www.dotnetnuke.com/About/LicensingandTrademarks/tabid/776/Default.aspx

I think in the 01.00.04 version minimal extropy should grow with the size of the logo
