Hi,

When I export a template using a non-default site template (new skin) and then attempt to use it as a template, the modules are completely scrambled on the page after the import. Essentially, the layout of the new skin does not correlate to the old skin. Is there anyway around this problem other than setting the new template as the default portal skin?

I can't apply the new skin to the site or it will trash the layout of the old skins yet to be updated. There are 500+ pages on the site. :-)

William,

It sounds to me like your pane structures aren't the same in the new skin compared to the old skin pane structure.

If you view the original skin in layout mode you'll get a view of the panes, mirror this layout using the same ID's for the new skin and it should work the same.

Regards,

Rick.

Easier said than done, Rick. Or so says the template maker. They said it was impossible to map the layout of my existing skin to the new, both of which they designed. Does it sound like they know what they are talking about or is indeed possible. The old skin was designed using CSS and HTML. The new skin is XHTML or XML.

Will,

I suppose it all depends on the layout of the design and how much space is available for the pane layout, but from an HTML and ID perspective (i.e. the layout of the panes and what you call them) it should be achievable. If for example you have 3 columns in the old skin called LeftMarginPane, ContentPane and RightMarginPane, then the new skin can have the same. This said though there may be restrictions with the new design, like width or other layout configurations that have a restriction on the use of panes. Would be interesting to see.

Rick.

Thanks, Rick. Yes, I think we just have to perform the upgrade to the new skin entirely manually. This has been one of the disappointing factors with DNN. That is, being able to apply a new skin to the entire site without wrecking it the old layout. There should have been some sort of standard layout forced between all skins early on, then  as script could have been applied that just ignored panes that weren't needed, even if it amounted to 25 or 30 different ones in the layout. Seems simple enough.

Imagine if you had a DNN site with thousands of pages? My god!!
