Hello All,

I'm very new to DNN and I'm a bit confused on changing the appearance of a Host and/or Site, more on the Site side. I installed two new skins via the install extensions as the host.  When I go to change the appearance and the radio button for Host is selected I have all my options, however if the radio button for site is selected, I have no options but the "Use Application Default"  According to the documentation, DotNetNuke_CE_5.3_Quick_Administration_Guide.pdf, I should be able to "Select Site to displays all skins stored on the Admin > Extensions page of the current portal."  However that's not the case.

I did check the Admin extensions and sorted by "Skin" and all three skins show up.  If go into Admin>Skins under the editor and I only select "Site", again "Not Specified" is the only option in the drop down.

I believe I read that the child portals or indiviuals pages appearence can be overwritten by chaging it from the local settings of that page or from the root of the child portal, which seems to work fine

What am I missing, am I looking in the wrong area, does one even need to select the "Site" option, what is it's purpose?

Thanks,
Bob

Bob,

I think the confusion here is with the diference between the Host and Site in reference to skins, I'll try and explain it below.

When you're installing skins, you have 2 options. The first is to install it through the Host Extensions, which makes the skin available to all portals you create within your DNN installation. The second option is to install it through the Admin Extension, which will localise that skin to the specific portal you've installed it through (this skin will not be available to any of the other portals, unless you install it through the Admin Extension of that portal). The key here is to think of the admin dropdown being specific to the portal you're working in, and the Host dropdown as the umbrella settings for every portal created by the DNN install.

So, now  when you're selecting a skin you've also got 2 options. The first is to pick a common skin that was uploaded through the Host Extensions, and these are available when you have the Host radio button selected. The second option is to pick from a selection of local skins, (ones that were installed through the Admin Extensions), which are available when you have the Site radio button selected.

As long as you are changing the skin settings for the Portal Skin and Portal Container within the Appearance section of the Site Settings in the Admin dropdown, it won't really make a difference if the skin is a Host or Site option.

I hope this helps clear things up.

Rick.

Bob,

Thant's no problem, one thing I forgot to mention though is that although you can upload through either the admin or host extensions, you have to be logged in as a host to upoad. If you're only logged in as an admin, you won't be able to install extensions, but can still pick from them.

Regards,

Rick.
