I have 15 years experience in IT.  I know some html but I was a hardware guy so my web skills are all learned on the fly.  I have agreed to help out with a website for a semi-pro football league.  The team I was helping to manage has dissolved but they asked me to stay on and help with the site.  I did do our team website, but it was just an uploaded Publisher template.  The person who designed the site had a team in the league and left for another league.  He was allowed to continue to maintain the site (bad idea) until there was suspicion he was using information gained from our league to help the other.  He was removed and I am helping out.  He is not exactly a happy camper about being removed so calling him is a last resort.  I have learned a great deal about Dotnetnuke in the past couple weeks but I'm still learning.  Problem is, we picked up another team to fill my team's spot and I have to create a team graphic to match the others.  Lined up together, they make a toolbar and it looks nice so I really don't want to change the whole thing.  The site is at www.crossroadsfootballleague.com  The graphics have the team logo on top of a blue bar.  The problem is I don't have an image of just that blue bar to put the new team's logo on.  I have no idea what type of program he used whether it was some fancy image editor, a template he found, or just plain Word.  I have the same issue with the team pages as the text spelling out their name is a picture.  Is there some sort of editor I can get and use to modify these pictures in that manner or do the templates look familiar to anyone?  One other issue I have is the team toolbar buttons change to another graphic when the mouse is rolled over.  I have figured out I can edit the html to make this happen with the new graphic (if I ever get it created) so it's a minor issue, but is there an easier way in Dotnetnuke?  Thanks for the help.

Download Gimp as www.gimp.org and play around with it. Your DNN template is an old one using a lot of Table-tags instead of the search engine better one DIV-tag

Not to stoke this fire, but the whole DIVs vs. Tables in regards to SEO has not been concretely proven yet as far as I'm aware, it's pretty much just something 'SEO Experts' throw around.  Tables should be avoided if possible, however especially since the OP is fairly green to development, tables may allow for an easier learning curve while also dealing with picking up the tricks of skinning DNN.

In my experience, the most significant factors in Search Engine Performance are:

  • Keyword-rich, quality textual content
  • Keyword-rich, quality textual content
  • Keyword-rich, quality textual content
  • Semantic markup - yes, this somewhat includes Div/Spans but is more focused on using proper Header tags (H1, H2, H3, etc.), P, UL, etc.
  • Properly setup robots.txt and Sitemap files
  • Strong network of quality inbound links from sites that relate to your 'market' or audience - random link farms aren't as great as one would think
  • Keyword-rich, quality textual content
Now, I am open for discussion but this topic's been hashed out many, many times in many different communities I follow, and I have yet to see a Google/Yahoo/Bing engineer come out and say definitively that DIV/Span is better than Tables for SEO.  I do believe we all should be working with pure CSS layouts as much as possible, but sometimes (many times) tables can allow for people to get their presentation layer correct across many browsers without as many cross-browser headaches and in a fraction of the time - particularly if they're fairly fresh to coding or they aren't planning on making a career of web-design or becoming a CSS Guru.

Thanks for the replies and apologies for taking so long to get back to the post.  I did download Gimp and edit the logo.  I wound up having to take the logo out of the pic and redoing the blue line.  It turned out ok, but the new team's logo isn't the best so it doesn't look perfect on the site.  I also have yet to figure out the font used on the individual team pages.  Considering the lack of communication with the league and the amount of unappreciated time I have put into the site, I'm not really concerned if I make it look any better than what it is now.  I'm pretty frustrated with the whole mess.  I was supposed to have help, but that hasn't happened. I've decided after this season, I'm completely done with it.

As far as the debate about an older version or whatever, I'm really not concerned about that.  I didn't set the site up and it has worked well for what I've needed it to do.  I've already had a huge learning curve with the site and don't really want to do any updates and make it tougher on myself by having to learn something else.  As I said, I was a hardware guy.  I've worked on mainframes, pc's, printers, video surveillance equipment, and computerized cash registers.  I was part of one of the first wireless network rollouts and supported that network.  I never had any interest in programming or web design.  Not that I couldn't learn it, but it never interested me, so what little I did learn has gotten me by.  My experiences with end users has caused me to get completely away from anything to do with computers altogether.  Of course, I was the one who was the computer guy so I was the natural choice for the league to pick to mess with the site.  I agreed because I did have some experience with a team website and because I am friends with most of those guys, but I wish I hadn't at this point.  It's too much work to do for free and I get no input from the teams.

Sorry, went on a rant, but I do appreciate the help.
