i add an html module to the top pane.
i add some html content to the module.
it displays
BUT......
it has moved down about an INCH. so now there is a huge gap between the bottom of the horizontal menu and the beginning of my html.
when i go into "view" mode, i can see that the top of my html module is a good 1/2 inch down from the top of the top panel. and it appears that the more content i add to the html module, the further down it moves from the top of the pane. it's like it's vertical alignment is set to "center" or "middle"

can anyone shed light on why this happens? it makes my site look bad because of the big gap.
i want my html module to come up as close as possible to the menu.

I have seen 2 reasons for this:

1. A margin-top on one of the elements in the HTML module (like the H1 in the title)
2. An HTML error in the skin

if i add an html module to the top pane and all i have in the html is the word "hello",
there is STILL an added padding or margin inserted between the top of the panel and the word "hello". so now i have a gap between the area with the "register | login  | breadcrumbs", and the beginning of my HTML, of well over an inch!

i think this all gets back to one of my biggest criticisms of dnn and the source for a lot of frustration for people when trying to use it:
i think the problem is that there is a setting in ONE of the MANY CSSs which is inserting this padding (or margin) within the panel itself.
if this is the case.....i then have to have an understanding of the hierarchy of CSS for dnn AND......i have to figure out which CSS has the issue AND FileManager does not access the CSSs! (can only be done via FTP)
so something as fundamental as moving a panel - becomes a nightmare.

I believe that there are some problems when using skins that are not well designed. I don't really think it's a DNN issue. Just some lingering of what has been. Using a quality skin makes a HUGE difference!

My suggestion? Don't ever use the DNN default skin. There are way too many nice, free and cheap ones out there to use poor/old skins.

Agreed the responsibilities are split over multiple CSS files.  You see it as a problem.

It allows great flexibility by allowing a module developer to create and publish CSS with his module that can work without wrecking the rest of the page.

To investigate your problem - If you use IE9 go into developer tools and you can instantly see what CSS is applied to any element on the page and where it came from.

If you don't use IE9, FireFox has similar tools.
