Hello Community,

I have been working with DNN since 3.x version.  I became fairly proficient at designing skins in 4.x for my company.  However, since the advent of 5.x the entire skinning process has changed.  While in some regards it has become more organized, it has also left someone like me who is not an expert in XML a bit out of loop.

I recently hired a designer who is fabulous at PhotoShop and has the ability to create some outstanding skin concepts.  However, we need to find the How-To guide for slicing a design, into it's layout, but more importantly how to properly make it into a skin.  We also want to understand how to create multiple containers that can be used on the same page.  The entire manifest file is completely a foreign concept for me.  It seems like such an ardious process to create a manifest file.  For a simple container that has 9 slices, you have to create an entry for each of the images in the manifest file.  It seems that it is no simple task.  In the past, the manifest file was of no concern.

I guess the bottom line to my question is... :-)

Is there a manual that shows you the step by step process for taking your html page with images and converting it into a working ascx page complete with manifest file.  Wow this was a long-winded post to arrive at the same place... I am confused.

Any help is appreciated.

I would be willing to pay for a manual if I knew it truly spoke to the needs we have.

Thank you in advance,
D. Kyle

Hello,
you can still create skins as you always did, the manifest file is an option (but highly recommended option) only. Using manifests does allow for better installation as a manifest can define dependencies (e.g. this site needs a particular skin object or that a skin needs a particular version of dotnetnuke) as well as support installation of multiple extensions (e.g. install a skin and a number of dependant skin objects)

Theres a bunch of general skinning information on the wiki at http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/W... ,, but http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/W... is probably the best page for you as theres links to tutorials that cover manifests as part of the process.

BTW the definition of the skin manifest can be seen at http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/W... . It is more work but in general it's just a cut and paste of a bunch of files nodes.
