I put

.DNNEmptyPane{width:0;padding:0;margin:0;}

in my skin.css file.  It works fine for non-page editors.
However, page editors still see the empty panes, which take up lots of space and can be confusing to novice users. Is there any way to hide empty panes from page administrators?

Using FireBug, the empty pane class is still there...
<td id="dnn_LeftPane" width="200px" nowrap="nowrap" class="leftpane DNNEmptyPane"/>

Why would .DNNEmptyPane collapse for the non-admins and not collapse for admins?

Thanks Cathal -- I think so too.
I learned CSS by examples online so I'm not the best at it..

I tried  adding .leftpane DNNEmptyPane{width:0;padding:0;margin:0;}  to my skin.css

Thought maybe it should be .leftpane .DNNEmptyPane{width:0;padding:0;margin:0;}? did not work.

Finally I added this:

td#dnn_LeftPane.leftpane.DNNEmptyPane{width:0;padding:0;margin:0;}

And it worked!!

The reason you had this issue was probably because your definition for the emptypane needs to be all the way at the bottom of skin.css.
You should not use the BTW #dnn_xxx id's as there is no guarantee they won't change in the future.

.leftpane .DNNEmptyPane cannot work, it addresses the .DNNEmptyPane element INSIDE the .leftpane, which does not exist.
Normally adding this at the bottom of skin.css should be enough:

.DNNEmptyPane{width:0;padding:0;margin:0;}

Thanks Timo --
I did have it at the very bottom of my CSS file.
Unfortunately, it still did not collapse until I added the very specific code as previously posted.
