At the Day of DotNetNuke in Charlotte, in several of the sessions they showed off the new messaging API in DNN 6.2, and one of thing they showed was that when a user logs in, if they have any unread messages or notifications then the number of unread items would show up next to their username, and they could just click on that number to go to the Messages screen.

Is that a skin object or widget than can be consumed by other skin developers? How would I include that functionality in my own custom skin?

its the user skin object - i noted the relevant properties in this thread http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Forums/forumid/108/threadid/458772/scope/posts.aspx -you can take a look at the darkknight skin to see them in use.
