Is it possible to stop users searching the site when they haven't entered anything in the search box?

I'm aware that if they don't enter any text in the search box then no results are displayed but is there anyway of disabling the search functionality until they have entered something into the search box?

you will need to modify the search input skin object/module.

Are you shure they are really performing an empty search? Most of the time, they press the ENTER key when they want to submit a form or so - and then, the search button is "clicked" by that.

I haven't found a solution for this problem, so I take it "as is" at the moment, but there are a lot of users complaining...

Well yes, if there is nothing typed into the search box and they press enter then surely they are performing an empty search?
