We have created some good looking and very straightforward skins for our customer, but now they want content laid out a little differently for mobile users. DNN 6 has device capability API's and a mobile strategy around redirecting to alternative portals. (And I know that being truly mobile friendly means much more that just rearranging the layout.)

I want to experiment with a single-portal solution that has a rudimentary alternative layout for mlbile users. I'm wondering if there's a way to at the top of my skin .ascx file detect mobile vs. PC, then "branch" to one layout or the other (in the same skin file). Maybe I'm way off here...

Ben,

You're not far off at all. From your post it seems like you're looking for a responsive design option. I recorded a video about responsive design when I spoke to our user group here in Charlotte, NC.

Amelia Marschall-Miller just presented on this topic at DNNWorld and she is really good at this. You can see her slides here: Responsive Web Design for DotNetNuke.

Ultimately you're going to use CSS media queries to detect the width of the viewport of the device viewing your page. In your CSS file you can set breakpoints (or like regions of CSS) that are only used for devices with specific widths.  If you're a desktop computer... use this wide layout. If you're a mobile device... use this narrow layout.  It's pretty easy to do and works well. There are good debates online about whether you should use responsive or mobile redirects, but that all depends on your end goal and I'm not going to go off on a tangent with that.

Hope this helps!

Ben

You can keep your css as is and add some new styles using mediaqueries ( just Google for it and you will find lots of info ) and then have special css there for mobile tablet etc.

See my latest skin ( soon to be released )

If you rescale this everything changes, moves or behaves differently ( portfolio sliders etc all are responsive )

For more complex skins with javascript effects and such another great tool to use is enquirejs which is javascript that reacts on mediaqueries as well

Hope this helps

Armand,
I have just started to lock into html5. When I lock at your skin source there are none of the new html5 elements like article, section, nav, aside. Could you shed some light on why this is the case please.
