I'm looking to replicate the vertical menu navigation from the Solpart menu. This is what I'd like it to look like: gatewaytotheweb.com I can make it work how I want by continuing to use the Solpart menu, but I'm concerned about future compatibility. I'm investing a lot of time in remaking a skin for a client to modernize it, and I'd like to also take the time to use the current menu standard.

 I've seen examples of this working, but can't replicate it myself. I've read several places that it should work with the Standard Menu template or with the Mega Menu template, but I cannot get it to work using either of the templates included with the Dark Knight skins, nor with the Mega2DNN template from the codeplex.

 Is this possible? If so, what would I need to do to the Dark Knight 3-column skin to replace the left content pane with a vertical menu?

You are right not  to use Solpart.

I would use one of the DDR unordered list xslt templates.
But this does mean you would have to make your own CSS.
If you have enough CSS experience, that should not be very difficult.
There are a loy of general CSS examples on the web.
