I've spent the past month getting the functionallity of my site (organization's Intranet) how I need it, now I'm looking at making it look good. I have 0 understanding of CSS at this point, and only minimal HTML knowledge. I have also spent many hours reading through the forums and DNN documentation. I need help w/ a couple things still;

I'm using the basic DNN portal skin (DNN-Gray-Horizontal Menu-Fixed Width) and just need to make some modifications to it. For example,

1. my logo banner at the top uses a white background in the jpg, but there is some space to the right of it that shows the grey of the page. I either need that to be white, or adjust the banner width maybe.

2. I would like to get rid of the Copyright, Terms of Use, and Privacy Statement. I already unchecked the Show Copyright Credits under host settings.

3. I would like to add some graphics to the menus.

Do I use the Stylesheet Editor under >Admin>Site Settings? Or do I need to edit it in Visual Studio? How and where do I make changes to SolPart Menu, or should I even touch that?

Thank you for your help and patience explaining this to me.

-Mike

Hello Mike

You don't need CSS knowledge for some of your answers.

1 - You need to modify the CSS file background-color: #eeeeee; - change that to background-color: #ffffff; that will make the background white. It's not the banner width, it's the padding in the table cell to keep things off the side of the panes. I think that changing the colour should help.

2. You have to go into the skin file and modify it - There are two ways to do this - You can open the ascx file in notepad and remove the following elements in the skin - They are right down the bottom of the page and easy to find.<dnn:COPYRIGHT runat="server" id="dnnCOPYRIGHT" /> <dnn:TERMS runat="server" id="dnnTERMS" /> <dnn:PRIVACY runat="server" id="dnnPRIVACY" />

3. You will need to learn more about CSS to do that - but in the interim what you can do is create a 16 x 16 icon - or larger if you want - and then in the pages settings, scroll downand click the Advanced box - and you'll see *Icons* and a dropdown box - If you select that and choose a picture - an icon will appear next to the page menu - Is that what you mean by graphics? If you want more complicated graphics you'll need to explore some of the CSS and documentation. I have a couple of free skins that have css elements with more colour in the menu.

You need to modify the skin.css file that resides in your skins folder to make changes to reflect that particular skin. I have also a video that gives you an overview on these things and where to find some of the files. But you can open Visual Studio and make the changes to the files - however, they are fairly minor - so even notepad will do.

If you use the ascx file and ftp - it will be reflected immediately. If you use the html method - you will need to zip and upload the skin so the skinning engine can reparse the skin and show the changes. You can also zip and upload the ascx file too.

I hope this clarifies some of your questions and the month end is a good one with your new site finished!

You might owe it to yourself to have a look at Lee Sykes' website:

There is a wealth of DNN related CSS information there!

Nina, Thank you for the info and all the other help you've provided in these forums.

1. Where do I modify the CSS file background? Or, which file is it? Under >Site Settings >Stylesheet Editor it's empty /* PAGE BACKGROUND */
/* background color for the header at the top of the page */
.HeadBg {
}

So, would I just need to put the #ffffff in there? Or, am I looking in the wrong spot?

2. Same question. Where and what is the name of the skin file .ascx All I have under >admin >Skins are .ascx and .vb files, and none named skin.* Again, I have a feeling I'm looking in the wrong spot.

3. I will try the menu icons a bit later. That's just something I thought might be interesting.

Thanks again, Mike

I do think Lee Sykes' website will be usefull once I get the basics of where the files are located and how to edit them.

BTW, I'm using DNN v.4.3.1
