Hi all,

I'm new to DNN and am curious about the 2 ways to create skins. Is there any benefit to using .ascx files as opposed to html/xml? I'm coming at this from a graphic designer background and I've found that the html/xml way is a bit easier for me to understand, but it seems that most reference materials talk about using .ascx. I did see that the skinning doc that I downloaded from DNN does have an .html example, and that's what helped me to see how easy this could be, but if using .ascx is considered "best practices" then I'd like to know.

Which way do most people create their skins and, more importantly, why?

I can only tell you what I do and most of the people I know, and how my staff work- and that's in ascx mode since it's faster.

But for people beginning, they may prefer to work in html mode. I feel there has to some knowledge in xml and my thoughts are - well, why not focus on learning ascx, instead of xml and html functionality.

That's just my opinion.

Do you mean you find it faster to develop? Or do you mean that once the skin is uploaded, DNN handles/renders .ascx files faster than html/xml?

She probably means faster to develop.  We do the same thing.  Actually, we do both, depending on the situation and the expertise of the staff performing the task in question.  Most staff only have access to upload skins through the regular skin parser, but those with more expertise in skinning work directly with the ascx files precisely because development is so much faster.  We usually set up each portal folder with skinning under development in that mode as a network file share.  This limits access appropriately.

Dear dnn-fellows

Of course you can do both. My experience is: when you start with designing skins and containers, it is easier to develope them with .html (+.xml). When you can do that very good, then develope your skins and containers directly in .ascx.
When you examine the conversion of a .html (.xml) file in a .ascx file, you'll also see that dnn put a few styles in it. Like for instance class="ConTtle" (container developing) which you can use, or  which you can change directly in ascx.
