or... (I should have thought of this from the beginning) I keep building the html code with the same way as I did with putting the image there in the first place. As Einstein said, "you should do it as simple as possible but not simpler" or something...

I added not only the border=0 but also the alt="Search" for good form.

<dnn:SEARCH runat="server" id="dnnSEARCH" Submit="&lt;img src=&ldquo;search.gif&rdquo; border=&ldquo;0&rdquo; alt=&ldquo;Search&rdquo; &gt;"/>

This is indeed a solution... (this is almost the solution that Nina gives...)
But now you've got not a link, hover, focus, active... state of the image...
In the solution that I've give you could set a background-image in the different classes...
But then you shall see that IE renders it different than FF...
