I want to change the text after the search box to an image. After much ado I managed to do just that in my default.ascx file by doing this:

<dnn:SEARCH runat="server" id="dnnSEARCH" Submit="<img src=“search.gif”>" />

I couldn't put the image in /image directory because the code for slash (⁄) didn't work out. Now I want the border to disapear around the image, but how do I do that?

Border="0" does it for me. ;)

Maybe I wasn't clear, the image isn't added through normal HTML code.

First, in the top of the default.ascx this is included:

<%@ Register TagPrefix="dnn" TagName="SEARCH" Src="~/Admin/Skins/Search.ascx" %>

In the default.ascx file where I want the search box to be the following tag is added

<dnn:SEARCH runat="server" id="dnnSEARCH" Submit="<img src=“search.gif”>"/>

Boder isn't an attribute of the Element so if I add it to the <dnn:SEARCH /> absolutley nothing should happen. I even tried it, and nothing did happen.

Now, having the installation on a dedicated server I can access all files, the database the whole thing I added in the Search.ascx file and added the attribute BorderStyle="None"but still it has an annoying border.

Have you tried to set a css class?...
I think that you can find the answer at your question here... where I've explained it how it can work.

And if those good instructions don't help, you can download a free skin I have create which looks like this - http://www.ninasfreeskins.com/shareme/home.aspx

It has the search function as an image and the code is in the skin. (this is for registered users)
