I want my submenu to have a different background and font color than my main menu.  Everything else seems to be working fine other than this.  Here is my CSS:

.MainMenu_SubMenu{
background-color: #ccccff;
color: #660000;
z-index: 1000;
cursor: pointer;
cursor: hand;
}

so why does my 'color' tag seem to not be getting picked up?  I'm wondering if there is some sort of inheritance issue going on here but not sure.  Ideas?

.MainMenu_SubMenu styles the submenu holder/container, but not the submenu items themselves.
"Item" means the actual text... they are styled by .MainMenu_MenuItem unless over-ridden.
Add one more class below yours, so the submenu items get styled:

.MainMenu_SubMenu .MainMenu_MenuItem {
background-color: #ccccff;
color: #660000;
z-index: 1000;
cursor: pointer;
cursor: hand;
}

Awesome, this is great.  One follow up.  You mentioned that this could be over-ridden.  Can you tell me how I would do that?

I did, but here goes again:

Add one more class below yours, so the submenu items get styled:

.MainMenu_SubMenu .MainMenu_MenuItem {
background-color: #ccccff;
color: #660000;
z-index: 1000;
cursor: pointer;
cursor: hand;
}
