Thank would be ok for me, but I wouldn't want to have my less savvy content administrators fiddling with html headers

Ah Yes - users with admin rights. 
My solution in a similar instance was to make two varieties of each container:
One set to 100% the other to the required px width. I suffixed the names FW and SB (full width and side bar) - my admin users had no problem with this. No good if you want to define a default container for a page or across a site though.

I am not sure how else you can get around the differing module size behaviours.
