Okay, I’m missing something besides brain cells but I’m having trouble developing some custom web user controls/ascx controls using VS2005 and DNN 402.

I’m creating a new solution for my custom module and I create a new class project with in the solution but can’t add a web user control to this class library.  The option to add this type does not appear in the New Item dialog.

So instead I create a new web-site and sure enough I can add web user controls to that project.  However, there is no output DLL produced when I build the project.

I know this should be simple but I’m missing something obvious.

I looked at the Module Developers Guide PDF but that didn’t seem to help.

Thanks,

Ed

Thanks but this does not help.

With the previous verion of DNN we created class libraries for our modules.  In these class libraries we composed our ASCX files etc.

I would like to continue to do the same thing with DNN 4.x and VS 2005.

The problem is I don't seem to be able to get VS 2005 to recognize the ASCX files, and their code behind files, within a class library project like I did with VS 2003.

We faced the same issue. Whenver we treid to compile it would say code behind file for the ascx file not found. This might be very stupid suggestion but it worked for us. We reopend Visual Studio and restartaed the machine. We closed all the code tabs which were open and then rebuild the solution and it worked !. This means while building don't keep any code file open. :) See if it works for you.

Thanks

The way to create a DNN module in VS2003 and VS2005 are much different.

If you like to use precompiled assemblies you must take care of:

  • You must make changes in your web config.
  • You must publish the web site to get the precompiled dll files
  • VS 2005 creates a precompiled dll file for each ascx. control.

But all these issues are described in the article from Shaun, follow the link to the entry on asp.net which is already posted from cathal in this thread.
