Quick  question for those who know: do I have to use VisualStudio to create my own mods in DNN?  I have a few pure vbscript apps I've developed that I would like to port over as modules to a portal, and with those like SOOP, it's been relatively painless using included templates and a good understanding of vbscript.  I haven't really read in-depth about DNN b/c I am still wrapping up a different project with an insane deadline.  A friend mentioned DNN as a commercial-grade portal soln and said I could save some time b/c most of the mods I need come standard or are relatively inexpensive, which I quickly found to be true.  However, I do have a few custom apps of my own that I would like to port over.  Most of it is pretty lightweight and produced using TextPad and FTP client.  Is this no longer an option for DNN?

For module developement you can use free Visual Studio Express for Web Developers (VWD), I suggest to have a look at the tutorials from Core Team member Michael Washington.

Thanks for the suggestion.  The reason why I asked is that I'm currently using a Mac Powerbook running OSX as my mobile workstation, having removed my Win environment to free up some disk space. I can reinstall when I get back home in a couple of weeks, but I wanted to see what I could do until then.

I know quite a few people use SharpDevelop as well. I guess technically you could get away with notepad and the .Net compiler as its just an ASP.Net project but the code completion stuff by itself makes the IDE worth it.

Assuming that you are looking at DNN 4.x then you can actually build full dynamic modules with just a text editor.
The webserver will compile the code on the fly as its loaded ...

BUT it is fully object based vb.net code you would be using NOT vbscipt - which are very different beasts these days

PS: having said that - I can imaging trying to actually develop without an IDE - and given DevExpress is free - why anyone would really bother
