the recommended approach is converting your web app into DNN modules.

Regarding module programming, have a look at the tutorials from Core Team member Michael Washington.

I agree that the recommended approach is to convert the web app to a DNN module.

But, that requires a couple of big steps.  First you need to get comfortable with DNN and then you need to learn how to convert the web app.

My suggestion -- having gone through this and maybe still going through it -- is to get familiar with DNN first.  Download the "install" package, get it running, and then create a test web site.  You can then add your existing web app using an iFrame.  You'll have your existing app running inside of DNN, you can take advantage of the security, membership, and role services provided by DNN, and you can begin to add the "other" things like forum and blog modules to your site.  All the while, your web app will be running right along with them.

Then, after an appropriate time ... you'll know when that is ... you can tackle the conversion task.

Personally integration of an existing ASP.NET website into DNN is not something that can be easily explained via a forum.  The overall process is not too complicated, but a lot depends on how the orig. application was built.
