Hello everyone, I have a question about DotNetNuke 4.5 and how it uses AJAX support and AJAX MS Extensions

Right now, I am trying to create a module with multiple controls.  I want some of these controls to utilize AJAX, some not.  My issue, is that whenever I try to add AJAX support, I can either make the entire panel refresh (using the partial rendering checkbox in the module definition)  or I cannot make any AJAX work, regardless of how many UpdatePanels I put on the site.

I would like to update only parts of the module because the data retrieved is very large.

I have tried putting the ScriptManager dependency in the module but that did not work.

I have also seen suggestions such as using a ScriptManagerProxy  and using the DotNetNuke ASP.NET AJAX Web Service tutorial but I could not get either of them to work.

I guess what I am asking, is can someone provide some direction, whether it be a document, a tutorial, or sample code.  If you are going to use the suggestions I have listed, could you also explain how they apply?  Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

I also wanted to note that using Telerik's AJAX control works in the fashion that I am looking for, but it is unacceptably slow in Firefox and it does not use the AJAX toolkit at all.

How did DotNetNuke ASP.NET AJAX Web Service not work? Thanks.

I think its more of a problem that I do not understand the directions for my case.

What I have right now for example, is I have three controls:  one is a button, another is a label, and the third is a gridView.  I want to be able to click the button, change the label, and not render the gridView again.  Using the partial rendering checkbox,  it will render everything within the module, regardless of what I do on the page.  I do not want this, as its silly to render the grid again when I just want to change the label.

I do not have any asmx files or javascript files to go with it, I was just trying to use the update panel in the AJAX extensions, which is probably why the guide posted is confusing me.

Hi Michael,

I'm somewhat confusd myself.

Can you just recap on some of the basics:

1). If I install a fresh version of 4.5.0 do I need to install anything else to utilise ASP.NET AJAX?

2). Are there any DNN samples of using ASP.NET AJAX with only part of a module control?  For example I have converted the UrlControl to a Customer Server Control and I want to ajax-it.

3). I was using Telerik Ajax Manager, but I want to keep more in line with DNN and I'm confused on what avenue to go down.

Cheers,

Colin
