Anyone had any luck using this technique?

I have no problems getting a view definition to work, the problem is tring to use an Edit defintion (or anything other than View):

"A critical error has occurred.
StartIndex cannot be less than zero. Parameter name: startIndex"

Anyone have any pointers?

Developing a module as an .aspx page as far as I know will NOT work....

Mitch,

This isn't regarding that. It's about developing modules using server controls and not using any user controls. See Charles Nurse' blog entry "Look Mom No Hands". I am aware that you cannot use .aspx pages in module development.

Again, I can easily get my custom module developed using server controls to render in it's view. The issue is anything other than "view" (e.g.: Edit, etc...).

There are other issues using this technique as well, such as resource files, but thats another topic.

I have come to the conclusion that this is pretty much a lost cause.

The old workaround of having an empty .ascx and generating the controls dynamically within code is the only way to go at this point.

I'm sure DNN will get their at some point, but it's just not "there"  yet.
