I'm about to suffer from a serious sense of humor failure. I've been following Michael Washington's DNNdevGuide trying to develop a custom module. Now this document is a bit sketchy to say the least. I've been busy with this for 2 weeks now, something that should have kept me busy for 1 or 2 days max. I've finally got to the stage where I run the SQL script to create the database tables and stroed procedures. Now the .pdf guide says, and I quote:

"From the Module Definitions menu, select Create New Module"

OK

"The DNN_Survey.dnn file (created in the earlier step) will be detected. Select it from the drop-down and click the Install link."

Will be detected? will? WILL? what if it does not get detected? What the heck do i do? how does this detection thingy work? is there a work around? Is there some other document i can follow that does not make so many assumptions? Please anyone help!

I'm starting to sound like a stuck record, please help! please help! please help!

Forgive me if i sound a bit aggrovated, cause i am, the minute i resolve an issue, the very next step raises more issues!

Thanking you in advance for your help.

Julian

Recently, I had a module that I was working on where the .dnn file was not detected.  Sometimes it can take a minute for the website and the filesystem to synchronize.  In this case, I simply repackaged the module like we used to have to do, uploaded the module  and the dnn file ran at upload.  The .dnn file is a manifest file that can easily be ran and have the same results as the site detecting the file and running it.  The disadvantage for someone recently coming to DNN is that the newest version are automating a lot of the functions that used to be done by hand.  I do understand that the Module Developer's Guide has some serious problems with assumptions and I have posted about this before, but as a whole for a new developer it works well to get you started.  Michael Washington's tutorials are also a great help.

Once you get through your first module, or 3 or 4, you will find that occasionally you will still have issues that pop up but it becomes easier to handle.

Wow that's humbling but thats a good thing. The document was out of date the day it came out because DNN keeps changing. But of course you can't expect DNN not to constantly change. I guess I could keep updating the .pdf but I choose to write tutorials on the newer stuff. I will probably update the .pdf in a few months if there are more serious changes.

Now, as to how hard it is to make a module with DNN. It should not be something that takes 2 weeks! Everything I have been doing is to remove this by trying to show how easy it can be. I strongly recommend that you simply go through these tutorials in this order:

  • Super-Simple Module (DAL+)
  • Super-Fast Super-Easy Module (DAL+)

Hi, thanks for the links, Don't get me wrong, I have lot's of your tutorials downloaded, and every one of them are very helpful, except ofcourse for this one :) The reason i mentioned your name was not to diss you, but to differentiate between the other DNN develpers Guide, done by Patrick Santry, and like you said, it shouldn't take me this long to develop a simple module, but it is, hence my frustrations.

Once again thanks for the links, this looks way much easier.

    Regards

    Julian

Hi, those two links did the trick, I actually learned more about how DNN handles modules using these short simple tutorials than with the developers guide. I think next time someone updates the dev guide, all they need do is add a link to yur site.

Once again, thank you very much
