Dumb question,  Has anyone tried to use other .NET (ASP.NET 2 compatible) components in a module ?  I have several solutions that use Far Point's Spread (Grid Control). .  .  it would be great if these could be hosted in a DNN Module. .   I develop using VS2005. .   thanks.

You can put most asp.net components into a module since a module in itself is really just a asp.net component of sorts anyway.

The best way to find out - is to simply try it.

Having said that - you may find that some things dont always work as expected.  Obviously most external components wont know about the DNN database layer or the DNN application environment.  So you may need to do a bit of wiring up coding to get things going a full strength.

a) check using of HTML-Module
b) I make a separate ASPX-page and shows this in IFrame-Module. But I'm on beginning, can't say especially tips. The best: can be another application with own database. In this kind I use DNN only for User- and Role-managing.

I use devexpress components. As long as the required assemblies get put into the bin folder, I don't see any problems.

My team has published literally hundreds of modules for our customers, and I can't think of one that didn't use a 3rd party component for something.  I don't have any personal experience with Far Point's Spread, but I regularly use:

  • Telerik RAD Controls
  • ComponentOne
  • DevExpress
  • Infragistics
  • Component Art

All you have to do is make sure the dll is in the bin directory and set the local reference property in your project to false.  I have found that some require you to manually register the control at the top of your ascx.  The easiest thing to do is look at the samples on the vendor's website and just copy a simple one into an empty module.  That will give you a really good idea on how the implementation works.  As was already suggested, you should just try it out, but I've yet to have one from the suites we subscribe to fail.
