I am a newbie at web programming and dotnetnuke.  We are thinking of migrating a desktop app to dnn.  We already have a  database with tens of thousands of records and I would like to keep this database separate from the dnn database.  ( if in the future we would use some other platform I would like to have the data be separate) Is there a way to program a dnn module to access a database other than the dnn database that was created when dnn was installed. So the portions of the website that are common to all dnn websites use the dnn database but my custom modules would use a different database.

Thanks so much

Judith

at its core DNN is still just a asp.net application - so there is nothing stopping you coding your own data access layer to access any database you need.

To simply connect to the external databse see:

Connecting to another database

To allow your DotNetNuke users to automatically log into your external application see:

Single Sign On

if your external application needs to see if the user is in your DotNetNuke site see:

DotNetNuke Web Services

Judith,

You can uses several third party modules to view data located in "other" databases.

For simple SQL Queries see my free module (sameless plug) called SQLGridSelectedView at www.treesleworks.ca or SQLView at www.dnnstuff.com .  Both of these modules will allow you connect to other databases as long as you can provide a valid connection string.  For help on Connection Strings see www.connectionstrings.com for help.

Hope this helps
Paul
