I'm creating custom modules that must connect to external data. I'm storing the connection string in the web.config file. In accordance with the tutorials the ConnectionString is defined in the control itself as in the following:

Dim

ConnectionString As String = "Server=ServerName;Database=DBName;uid=UserID;pwd=Password;"

I don't want to do that.  I want to use the additional ConnectionString in my web.config. The connection string has a name. How do I retrieve this ConnectionString by name and populate the ConnectionString variable above?  Any help here would be appreciated.

Jon

I found a means of accessing my connection string by name with the following function below. I just add the following in my code behind. How would I make this into a class for reuse?

Dim ConnectionString As String = GetConnectionStringByName("DOMSYNC")

Private Shared Function GetConnectionStringByName(ByVal name As String) As String
  ' Assume failure
  Dim returnValue As String = Nothing
  ' Look for the name in the connectionStrings section.
  Dim settings As ConnectionStringSettings = _
  ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings(name)
  ' If found, return the connection string.
  If Not settings Is Nothing Then
    returnValue = settings.ConnectionString
  End If
  Return returnValue
End Function

if you had this in your web.config...

<add name="RandomDatabase" connectionString="Server=SERVER1;Database=RandomDatabase;uid=user;pwd=password;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient"/>

all you need to do is add this to your codebehind...

Imports System.Web.Configuration

strConn = WebConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("RandomDatabase").ConnectionString

Thanks. That's even easier!
