What's up,
   I am already using my own custom AspNetMembershipProvider provider.  Works great.  I love that this is an option.

Now I would like to use a custom SqlDataProvider provider.  Created a new project in VS 2005 just like I did with the Membership provider. Updated the web.config file to point to my custom provider, just like I did before:

<data defaultProvider="MySqlDataProvider">
   <providers>
    <clear/>
    <add name="SqlDataProvider" type="DotNetNuke.Data.SqlDataProvider, DotNetNuke.SqlDataProvider" connectionStringName="SiteSqlServer" upgradeConnectionString="" providerPath="~\Providers\DataProviders\SqlDataProvider\" objectQualifier="" databaseOwner="dbo"/>
    <add name="MySqlDataProvider" type="DotNetNuke.Data.SqlDataProvider, MyProvider.Provider.SqlDataProvider" connectionStringName="SiteSqlServer" upgradeConnectionString="" providerPath="~\Providers\DataProviders\SqlDataProvider\" objectQualifier="" databaseOwner="dbo"/>
   </providers>
  </data>

But after turning to run this MANY times I always get the error:

Value cannot be null.

Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Am I missing something?  Do I need to override something else?

Thanks very much!

OK, going to answer my own question for other people who have the same problem.

Figured this out with another developer and by stepping through the source code.

I had everything correct, except that you have to keep the "defaultProvidername='SqlDataProvider'".  So you just have to name the DNN core sql provider something else like "DNNSqlDataProvider" and name your provider "SqlDataProvider".

When DNN makes the Provider object for the SQLDataproviders for some of the controllers (Membership Provider for one) it appends "Data.SqlDataProvider" onto the end of the name of the objects and then uses the Reflection class to take that new name and create the data object from it.

So by changing the name to "MySqlDataProvider", the name of the class was changing to "Data.MySqlProvider" and was not finding that.

SO, the above web.config statement SHOULD be:

<data defaultProvider="SqlDataProvider">
   <providers>
    <clear/>
    <add name="DNNSqlDataProvider" type="DotNetNuke.Data.SqlDataProvider, DotNetNuke.SqlDataProvider" connectionStringName="SiteSqlServer" upgradeConnectionString="" providerPath="~\Providers\DataProviders\SqlDataProvider\" objectQualifier="" databaseOwner="dbo"/>
    <add name="SqlDataProvider" type="DotNetNuke.Data.SqlDataProvider, MyProvider.Provider.SqlDataProvider" connectionStringName="SiteSqlServer" upgradeConnectionString="" providerPath="~\Providers\DataProviders\SqlDataProvider\" objectQualifier="" databaseOwner="dbo"/>
   </providers>
  </data>

And it works just fine.
