I am taking a completely language agnostic approach to this project and have opted to remove all requirements for database scripts. I would like for my product to update the database schema itself. When dotnetnuke is being setup, my project will check the schema and update it if necessary. Do you see any reasons why this wont work?

I am not sure I see the difference between that and a database script. When DotNetNuke is being set up it determines what the last version was and runs a script to update the schema.

Is there any way to update a database schema other than a script?

Yep, I just ran it this morning and created the schema for the latest version through my executable in about 2 seconds. I was just asking if there were any red flags that came to mind when i mentioned the way i am approaching this.

I cannot see any problems with this approach. Except that at times a DotNetNuke upgrade script will do things like grab all existing records in a table and alter their values. For example, look at this script:

http://www.adefwebserver.com/DotNetNukeHELP/DNN4_SurveyModule/files/03.03.00.SqlDataProvider.txt

it contains:

update {databaseOwner}{objectQualifier}Surveys
set    CreatedByUser = CreatedByUserID
GO

your process would need to handle situations like that. As you can see this is not a schema change but it is part of the upgrade script. The company that creates the Oracle provider is does some fancy things to make their provider work. So of course you can make it work.

Michael,

I just read something about SubSonic. It looks to me like these guys have already made a DAL that supports MySQL, Oracle, and SQL Server.

Michael,

I think that I will have a working mySQL version by the week's end. Is there a way that I could give you the provider offline? I dont really want to publish it until I get positive feedback. I would also like to correspond with you about a couple of other things.

Martin
