I have done a search but can't find information on how to add module content to a website's structure.  If I have missed the discussion, please let me know the link.

I want module to be able to extend a site's logical structure currently managing as DNN tabs.  The tabs are a great concept for the main "highways" but fall short when a module creates its own paths.  For instance, an article module will always have a breadcrumb that reads:

home > articles

Regardless of how many sections and articles it has.  It should be able to appending something like:

home > articles > module category > module article

I understand how the limitation came about from a technical perspective but this leaves the website visitors behind.

Other objects that are impacted:

  • Site maps
  • Search engine site maps
  • Menus and general navigation

I believe these are critically important pieces to the Internet and DNN sites should be able to provide as much detail as possible.

I want to start a discussion on how this might work. For instance, should modules be able to add logic to the tab index? Could they have a special data type that allows them to patch in a site structure branch to the page node?

In my opinion, showing tab name in the breadcrumb is ok. If developer want to extend the functionality, they can do that at the module level dynamically. But the core functionality to show only tab name in their index it's just fine for me.

The problem is there are two realities: data and visitors'.

The data reality is DNN creates nodes on which modules house data.  This data is often organized into folders and other sub pages.  This is where the second reality has a problem.  The average visitor doesn't know or care that a module controls the data.  From their persecutive, the website is a single entity but the navigation is factured and split all over the page.

I argue we build websites for people not data.  Therefore, the structure should match people's exceptations.

I believe the navigation and logical structure of webiste should make sense to a visitor which means tools like sitemap and breadcrumb should be routinely extended by the modules on the node.

I want to suggest this in Gemini.  Before I do however, I would like some feedback.
