I am new to my organization. For legacy reasons and / or being somewhat afraid that an upgrade may break custom modules built by my company for its intranet, developers here would like to continue using version 3.x of DNN circa 2005 running on a Windows XP machine. I’m not exactly sure what version they are using but could probably find out.
Currently, I have Visual Studio 2003 installed on my machine but also have access to VS 2005 and VS 2008. I would like to install VS 2008 and start to build a custom module that would either plug right into the existing DNN framework we are using, or perhaps make use of a “hack” that uses an IE IFrame to view web pages external to DNN. By using the latest .NET framework, I could leverage the full potential of the newer ASP.NET web controls.

Is it possible to develop modules in VS 2008 for DNN targeting either the 2.0 or 3.x Framework that will run seamlessly in an older version of DNN (One that uses the 1.1 version of the framework)? If so, is there anything I must consider? The previous developer of DNN here used a version of codesmith aimed at our version of DNN. Will this version of codesmith work in VS 2008 and be able to be deployed to an older version of DNN? If that is the case, then obviously both frameworks must be installed on the machine running DNN. Will this simply not work or are there subtitles that I must be aware of? If it will not work, can someone suggest an alternative? Any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks,

Kai

DNN 3 modules can be developed  exclusively using .Net Framework 1.1 and VS2003, but will run in DNN3 and DNN4 versions

DNN 4 modules can be developed only in VS 2005 or VS2008 using .Net Framework 2.0, 3.0 or 3.5 and will run only in DNN4.0+

If you try to use a solution in an IFrame, you have to be aware, that you cannot use any functionality of the DotNetnuke Framework including user credentials.

I suggest to setup a dev env with VS2008 and latest DNN to test compatibility of your companies modules and upgrade them to DNN4. Subsequently continue to upgrade portals and continue development on VS2008
