I am starting a website using DNN which needs users to have an extra field in their profile page. I have found how to do this via Admin, User Accounts, Manage Profile Properties, Add New Profile Property. The problem is that there is no option for a data type of 'dropdown' or 'list'.

The dropdown needs to contain a list of groups where the user can select the group they wish to be part of (e.g. a hobby site might have 'fishing', 'sailing', 'surfing' etc.). After logging in, the user would see content relating to that area.

I realize this could be done using different portals for each user group, but in this case there are many groups and they are all strongly related. A close analogy is an ex-students website for a school, where each group represents the year that the student graduated (e.g. '1970', '1971', '1972', 'teachers', 'parents').

I can only find two threads asking about this topic so I guess it is an exotic request:

The only recommendation I have found is to use a 3rd party module. It looks good but I would really like coding it myself if it is not too complex. I have been developing for many years, so coding isn't an issue. I just need a pointer of where to start. I have looked through the excellent module creation tutorial, but I can't find any documentation regarding user profiles (I can only find proposal PDFs).

There is a "list" type of Profile Property that you can add.

But, there's not a way to connect a selection from that list to a security group.

You might want to take a look at DataSprings' Dynamic Registration module.  I think that it will provide the functionality that you want ... and much more.  For example, a user might be able to select multiple "groups" from a list ...

Thanks Joe I actually came across the 'List' type after having another look through.  Pretty stupid of me to miss it.

I might have to try the 3rd party module if I can't get this to work, but I'll give it a try first.  If you think it would be a very complex task then please let me know and I'll just go straight with the module.  It's not a money thing (it's a very cheap module) but I'd just like to try doing it myself as long as it's not way too difficult.
