I've searched all over for an answer to this, but have yet to come across one. It seems like there is no security at the item level of a module. Say I add 3 docs to the doc module and want to assign a different role to each one...is there a way to do this? Have any of you extended a module to do this? Where can I go to get an example or tutorial of this? I've seen a lot of ppl asking how to accomplish this, but have yet to find an answer? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

many of the core modules already implement custom permissions, see http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Blogs/tabid/825/EntryID/1052/Default.aspx for an example.

I appreciate the post, but don't think that helps me with what I am trying to do. Basically, using the doc module as an example, I want to be able to add a whole bunch of documents to this one module and for each document set the role that gets to view it. So I could have 10 documents in the module, but when a certain user (UserA) views the module he/she may only see 1 or 2 docs that were assigned to him (through security roles). Any ideas?

I can answer specifically on the documents module.

Yes, you can do this, but it requires a different folder for each user role.  So if you wanted to create a documents module that can display files to Registered Users, All Users and Administrators you would need the following.

1.) A folder with view permissions to registered users ONLY.  When adding documents for registered users add them to this folder
2.) A folder with view permissions to Administrator users only.  When adding documents for admin users add them to this folder
3.) A folder with view permissions for all, this is where the "all users" files go.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I would like to know you could implement item level security for any module (announcement, links, documents, etc). Say I had a links module with all of links in there, but assigned different roles to each link and then only those links would show up for each user (same for announcements)?
