I am investigating the use of DNN for a customer access portal to their orders, invoices, ect... for our company. I have a great deal of .net 2.0, C#.net, and SQL programming experience. Our goal is to provide easy access through a standard portal to provide the overall management and provide modules to allow their (customer) access to informative data.

Since I'm a DNN newbie... does DNN have Modules to assist in Database access? I can provide all that doesn't exist but didn't want to reproduce something that could/should be used...

Any suggestions would be appreciated on what I should review...

thanks, newB-bob

The core, and all the core modules use a data access provider pattern that means it's easy to create alternative data providers to support other databases (see data access doc @ http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Documentation/DownloadableFiles/tabid/478/Default.aspx for more details). However, this is a "best practice", you can connect to a database in any way you like e.g. lots of people use the DAL+ support (see http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Blogs/tabid/825/EntryID/481/Default.aspx and http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Blogs/tabid/825/EntryID/1267/Default.aspx for examples), others use Linq to SQL, and others choose to simply leverage the microsoft data access block that's referenced.

You may want to look at SQLGridSelectedView at www.treesleworks.ca  I use this free module extensively to display application data and current status .   If you need quick database views with various types of selection criteria this may save you some work.

Paul:

I looked at your website and like what I saw. I'll be sure to download the tool and see where it takes my initial development. I've created a number of data access websites and have always wanted a tool like this... Thanks for the app and I hope it works for us.
