Hi

We have our DNN site and a whole lot of custom modules in DNN 4.2 , we want to upgrade to DNN 4.9 and eventually to DNN 5.0 with minimum hassel.

Is it good to do an upgrade to  4.2 -- 4.6 -- 4.9 or can we have a new site in 4.9 directly and port all the modules to the new install?

The major issue i can see using a new 4.9 install directly is , there are some DNN roles tied up into our Application DB, which should not break , can i write scripts to set up users / Roles / Role Groups in the New Install to use the same Ids inorder not to break the Connection b/w DNN Db and our Application DB ?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Raja

I would create a staging site using a copy of the current site files and database.  Then you can just try to do a direct upgrade to 4.9.0 and test your site before doing the upgrade on the production site.  Also, before running the upgrade on the production site, I'd definately make sure I have a good DB backup and a backup of the site files.  This way you can rollback if there are any unexpected issues not encountered on the staging site.  IMO, it is always better to upgrade rather than do a new install and manually port everything over.  I only would do that for the most basic sites (only standard modules and not a whole lot of content)
