Hi All,

I'm trying to port some module code from DNN2 to DNN4.  I have places where I was using:

CType(HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.Name, Integer)

To get the currently authenticated user's ID.

How do I do this in DNN4?  I've not been able to figure it out so far.  Any pointers?

try

UserInfo.UserID.ToString()

UserID is not a static member so I couldn't access it without instantiating the UserInfo class and checking the member on the resulting object.

But it works.

Is this the proper way to do it?

    Dim UI As UserInfo = New UserInfo()
    HttpContext.Current.Trace.Write("User ID", UI.UserID.ToString())

Ok, I take it back: it doesn't work (the way I have it, anyway).  I'm always getting -1 for the UserID, even if I'm logged in.

Any help?

Assuming that your module derives from PortalModuleBase or from your own base class which derives from PortalModuleBase, both UserId and UserInfo are public properties of PortalModuleBase and should directly give the UserID and other information regarding the currently logged in user.  Some information such as the e-mail address of the currently logged in user is not directly found in the UserInfo object but rather in UserInfo.Membership.  Your last attempt which created a new instance of the UserInfo object will not work as the new instance simply will come back with the properties initialized to their default values such as UserId which will return -1.

So, the following should work:

   UserID returns the current user's UserId (integer)
   UserInfo.Fullname returns the current user's full name (string)
   UserInfo.Membership.Email returns the current user's e-mail address (string)

This will also work in your settings control which must derive from ModuleSettingsBase.
