So I am experienced as a .net developer and I know how to write user controls. My question for the board is if I have some user controls that I want to make into simple modules can anyone help me with a step by step on how I might go about making this happen?

What would I need to do to simply use my ascx files as modules in DNN??  I wont be leveraging really any of the DNN API in the user controls because they already exist I just want to make use of them.. can you help me here?

Thanks

Hey tknman0700,

Here are the basic steps.

  1. Change existing UserControl to inherit from DotNetNuke.Entities.Modules.PortalModuleBase instead of UserControl.
  2. Place User Control in DesktopModules directory of your DNN website (e.g. DesktopModules\MyNewModule
  3. Log in to your DNN site as host
  4. Navigate to Host -> Module Definitions page
  5. From the "action menu" select "Import Module Definition"
  6. Select your User Control from the "Control" drop down list and click "Import Control"

You won't get any kind of success message, but if you scroll down on the main Module Definitions page you'll see a new module listed with the name of your control. From there you should be able to drop it on a page and use it (of course you'll need any dependencies available e.g. an assembly in the bin folder)

That's the "Quick and Easy" approach :)

Hope that helps!

Take care,

Ian
