Hey all,

I am fairly new to DNN and have started to develop modules for our company. (They bought into DNN after I suggested it for a new project). I have a question about the best way to save some data. The scenario is as follows:

We have a need for a links module that will display links for each user and display them when the user logs in. Works exactly like the Links module, only on a per user basis. Kind of like a favorites list. I have created a table similar to the Links table, and added the UserId to the table to uniquely identify the links for that particular user. so far so good.... My question is this... would it be better to save the data in the users profile or to save it in a db table? The list is unique for each user and there could be an unlimited amount of links saved. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Marcus,

For storing lists of information like this, I would strongly recommend using the database table approach that you described as your current solution.

This will be far more optimized for the purposes.

maybe the easiest option would be to use UDT/form and List module with a filter, displaying only own items (and appropriate permissions set).

Thank you both for your input. In the end I did decide on the Database table as I can control the indexing for performance and scalabilty, etc... I am mimicking the List control functionality, but have added the UserId to distinguish who the links belong to. Where I was really just mimicking the functionality, the table and proc definitions were already done, as well as the UI controls, just had to modify them to accept the UserId as well. Made it easy to do.

Great product and help. Keep it up!!
