What tool do I need to modify the DNN core?  VS 2005?  Specifically, we have some changes (additional columns) to the DNN_Users table and these changes need to be reflected in the registration & user controls.  (Along with the dataprovider, controller, info etc..)  We are currently runing DNN 3.3 and have made the changes.  Do we need to make changes to the library project & recompile there?    Also, this might be a silly question, but why is the markup (.ascx) for the user controls in the website, but the code under the library?

Thanks.

If you truly want to modify the core, you can do it using any version of VisualStudio.  You mentioned you are running DNN3.3.  That's VS2003.  If you go to DNN4, you will use VS2005.

Now, get that thought out of your head.  You should avoid modifying the core at all costs.  You'll really kick yourself at upgrade time if you have to sit on an old version (eventually even not supported) just because you couldn't figure out how to meet your requirement without a core edit.  If all you need to do is extend the user profile, you can now do that from

Admin > User Accounts > Manage Profile Properties > Add Profile Property

There are many of us with huge sites, complicated business requirements, custom providers, etc... and we still don't have to edit the core.  Really, really really try not to do that.  JMHO
