In your SqlDataProvider just specify which fields can have NULL values.

For Example

Public Overrides Sub UpdateContacts(ByVal itemID As Integer, ByVal moduleID As Integer, ByVal name As String, ByVal email As String)
     SqlHelper.ExecuteNonQuery(ConnectionString, DatabaseOwner & ObjectQualifier & "Contacts_Update", itemID, moduleID, GetNull(name), GetNull(email))
End Sub

Cool, thanks, that was just what I was looking for, using nullable types works like a charm.

Thanks again.

please notice, that the nullable basic data types use special values, that are recognized as null and shall not be used aside, e.g. -1 for integer and "" (empty String) as Null-String.

I'm new to all this, but my limited understanding is that Nullable types are something new to ASP.Net 2.0, and you need to declare them in your VB/C# code so that the Database will accept a Null value when you insert/update - like this:

Dim varName As Nullable(Of Integer)

Is this what GetNull(...) is doing, or am I missing the point?

Thanks.
