Is it possible to set up a DNN site where new registered users enter their email address as their user name, rather than creating their own?

Its possible but you have to work in the core

You will need to edit user.ascx in the controls directory to drop the first and last name and the username field - then you need to edit the user.vb in the library part to handle your specific reqirements for the username

Or you could take the logic from those files and create your own registration module that handles this

also, you have to look at the logic for Usernames in general. The username will be stored in the aspnet tables, and cannot be changed after its been stored. Thats not something that works very well with e-mail addresses

So yes.. it can be done, but the road to travel is to create your own membership and profile provider.. or maybe rethink your requirements....

Good point Erik!

I hadn't thought down that path - one thing that might work is having a table that maps a program generated username to the email address you look up the username in that table and use it to login - need a custom login to handle that

But like you said Erik he might want to reconsider the requirements - I think a lot of people like to have ther own names as a username

ON THIS SUBJECT

Is there anyway that people have found to be able to have changeable usernames - it seems this issue comes up every once in awhile

AFAIK this is not supported by MS membership component.
