Is there a way to hide a module if there is an error displaying it?  For example, I have a few UserGroup modules from SmartThinker that have content based on information that is passed in.  The Groups module links to a Group Details page and displays a Group Details module based on the group passed to the page.  If a user somehow gets to this page without a group passed, the Group Details module will display "There was an problem loading this group - please try again.".  I'd like to do a redirect to the page containing the Groups module so that a user does not see this error.  Is there any way to detect this "event" and maybe put some code in the header/footer to redirect based on this?

Thanks in advance...

This isn't really the right place to discuss third party module - Have you contacted smart thinker - I'm sure he'd be interested to come up with a solution if he doesn't have one on his site.

Hi Nina,
I'm not really trying to fix anything on a third-party module, I was just using that as an example.  I'm new to DNN, so maybe I'm misunderstanding something... is there is no standard module that uses any form of pass-thru variables?  If that's the case, I apologize for using that example.  However, in general, I'd like to know if there's a way to catch an event in a module of any kind (such as an error message or any dynamic/generated content) and based on that, run some code in the header/footer.

Thanks for your help.

That's ok - sometimes it's hard to get the meaning of posts until we read them a few times, and I because there are so many modules you can't possibly answer all the questions - but I know what you mean - it's not really an error - it's simply got nothing to show - sort of gracefully hiding nul results - I think that's how I've heard the terminology.

I remember seeing that on a couple of modules - I'm trying to think and I told the developer that there was a bug because it came up with an error - and I think the response was that it wasn't an 'error' but it was how a 'null response' was answered and they changed it to 'supress' the display on the page or to ignore it.. So what i'm trying to say is that .. the result didn't change, just the way it was handled, and that's what you're looking for - I'll ask a couple of people now that I know what you want to know.

I don't usually answer questions in here - it's out of my league - but I might know someone who can. - because they've been able to, at times, decipher my terrible way to say .. sorry - I broke it.

Hi Nina,
Maybe I was wrong to use the example I did... I'm not trying to fix this third party module.  I just want to know, in any module, is there a way to write code based on the module output.  Say, I add the NewsFeeds module and set up an RSS feed, but I want to hide that module entirely if the RSS feed is too long or cotains words I don't want to display on my site.  Is there a way to, once the module is loaded, search the lenght or the content of the module, and based on that, hide the module.

This may require me to tweak the module itself, but I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to use the header/footer section creatively to accomplish something like this.

Thanks,
