I have updated my Tell a Friend module with the following features:

  • Social Bookmark Sites can now be easily added.
  • Icons have been added.
  • CSS styles can be applied to the links.
  • You now have to option to use horizontal or vertical layouts.

This module is still free and will remain that way.  It is just my small offering to the DNN cause.  You can find it at Click and Create- DotNetnuke Free Tell a Friend Module.

Please leave comments about where you are using it or if you have suggestions!

Hi Eric,

Nice, you've used exactly the same nine Social Bookmarks sites as our existing module, good to see you've put some thought it to it and not just copied someone else...

Just thought you should know that your module is not SEO friendly, and in its current form is quite dangerous for anyone who uses it.  I can see at least two reasons why:

- Your module passes the wrong URL to the social networking site.  It passes the basic URL, not the rewritten DNN friendly URL. This will result in a) duplicate content and will risk losing page rank, and b) page rank dilution due to one page being linked to by 2 different urls - each url will get a split of the page rank, thereby diluting it.
- Your module does not send any URL parameters to the social networking site.  Anyone who clicks on the resulting link at the social networking site will not get back to the original page anyway.

Regards,

JK.

SEO friendly SocialBookmarks module for DotNetNuke 4 and DotNetNuke 3 is available now at www.snowcovered.com and a free demo version is available at www.bestwebsites.co.nz

ps: I dont appreciate someone copying my modules.  All of my modules are copyrighted.

JK,

Thanks for pointing out the problem with the URL's.  After I had created the initial email module (see my post) I had stated on my web site that I was planning to add other linking functionality.  This was a quick module (took about 4 hours to code) that I feel my clients and others might find useful. My code was written by me without reference to your code.   My main motivation for the program was from this site: http://www.ifeedreaders.com/social-creator/

I don't think I am really in competition with you (since I am offering this for free) because of the value added by your support and testing.

JK,

FYI, to be fair, I have added links to your module both on my site and on snowcovered and have outlined the issue with SEO.

Based on JK's concerns, I have reverted this module to its former email only version.  I will be modifying the module to all the user to make a couple customizations and change the layout.
