Ingen Systems is proud to announce NukePress, a new blog module for DotNetNuke.

Why a new blog module?

When working with the core DotNetNuke blog, though a great free social module for DNN, many of our clients brought up key needs that it didn't address, including allowing multiple users per blog, flexible categories, and many social features that clients had become accustomed to when using popular blog engines.  With these considerations,  NukePress was born.

NukePress

NukePress is a blog module that was built from the ground up to leverage the best practices of popular blog engines such as WordPress, while maximizing the power of DotNetNuke.  Ease of use  and clean code were key in building NukePress.

NukePress Key Features include:

  • Satellite Modules - Install modules anywhere and point to any blog.  Modules include:

    • Blog - main module
    • Categories
    • Archives
    • Tags
    • Bloggers
    • Featured Posts
    • Recent Comments

  • Multiple Users per Blog - easily & effectively uses DNN's role-based security
  • SEO - leverages SEO best practices to maximize visibility
  • WC3 Standards Compliance - 100% standards compliant
  • CSS - no tables!  Fully CSS driven
  • Filtering via: tags, categories, bloggers, archives
  • Import - Easily Import the core DNN Blog module
  • Social Bookmarks - Integrate NukePress with Digg, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Technorati, email, text messages, etc.

Great!  I love options and there is certainly not yet a clear leader for Blog needs in the DNN realm (though I personally support advancement of the core Blog module and many others leverage Ventrian NewsArticles for the task).

After a quick peek at your page on Snowcovered and your main website here are a few thoughts:

  • Visuals:  Add a few more screenshots to the Snowcovered page.  I'd show a blog entry edit screen and a module settings screen.  Though these aren't "sexy" items from a visual standpoint, they will be reassuring to people who may worry whether the module has a familiar UI.  A couple of examples of alternate blog stylings/layouts would be nice as well.

  • Core requirement:  Though I appreciate that you don't want to potentially scare away customers, I'd recommend that you always very clearly point out the ".NET 3.5" requirement.  The product page on Snowcovered does very clearly state this (twice) but it was not mentioned along with the list of major featuers in the initial post in this thread.

Besides the fact that DNN only requires the 2.0 framework, there are many hosting providers (including some "big" names like Network Solutions) that are not up to 3.5 yet so some customers will not be able to use the module.  I'm all for everyone moving up to the 3.5 framework but, until that's the norm, I think any place you make an effort to cite a list of features is also a place where you should cite this critical requirement.

  • More Demo Examples:  It's great that you've set up a working demo for people to try with the default DNN skin.  I'd recommend you extend the demo site to include a few other skins as well as some custom CSS to illustrate the module's presentation versatility.

  • Free CSS:  Leverage your efforts from adding more examples to the "Demo" site.  Any alternate CSS you create for your demo page you can make available for free to customers in "CSS packs".

  • Content generation:  I didn't see MetaWeblog support in the features (something already included in the latest DNN core Blog module) but I did find it included in the roadmap (yea!).  I really like the fact that you've included an expected build date for your next roadmap items (with MetaWeblog support coming possibly as soon as this week).  This plus the planned addition (in Q3) of BlogML support is very cool.

  • Tag cloud:  Perhaps it's something easliy corrected in CSS, but the tag cloud currently takes up a lot of space on the demo site.  Besides tightening up the rendering area (via an auto-contract/expand option?), for a "wow" effect you might consider adding some tag cloud generation options to the roadmap such as multi-color tags, multi-font, multi-layer (inline versus overlap), alphabetical listing versus tag frequency, etc.  You could really up the ante by throwing in a Flash and/or Silverlight option for an animated tag cloud -- that feature alone would be enough to draw some people to your product.

    Animated Silverlight Tags

  • Pricing question:  Strangely, your Snowcovered listing price is $99 but your website "introductory" price is $149.  Is this disparity intended?

Hope the feedback helps.  I look forward to seeing how your module progresses with the planned enhancements.
