I've been having similar problems and am working my way through finding combinations of markup in the templates that look acceptable in the key browsers (ie the last two releases of firefox and IE). I'll be blogging and posting links here as I get combinations working over the next few days. I've got a setup for the catalog which I'm quite happy with, and am working on the product detail now.

more soon...

Dave  - please post a reply soon - whatever you have would be useful.  Display in Firefox is horrible.

Ok - I've blogged the changes I made to ProductList.htm and StoreFront.css which fixed the Firefox formatting problems I had on the catalogue page - at least for me. It just simplifies the htm file down to the bare minimum and uses CSS to define the widths of the various elements of a product listing. The changes should be easy to replicate for the other sorts of lists you can do in the catalogue such as featured products.

I'd appreciate it if people could share any improvements they come up with - I'm no css expert so I'm sure there's better ways to do it.
