Hello.  I've used DNN on and off going back to version 3 and I've checked out the store in the past.

Now I have a new project on my plate.  I am working for a small internet retail store that currently has it's web site hosted by Prostores (an eBay subsiderary).  We are going to be moving off that platform and I know that DNN is a good option.

Our main problem is that we sell on multiple venues and import all our orders in to a custom built Inventory and Order Management system.

So, the main question.  I will be needing to export orders from the DNN Store into my own database (and format) and then after the orders are processed, upload the appropriate information back in to DNN (item is shipped, tracking number, etc...)

Any comments about how well my plan might work?

Thanks.
Tom

Hi Thomas,

The Store module do not allow you to export orders. You could create a separate module to do it or even better create some web services using IWeb from Michael Washington. By the way, you will be able to get orders and update orders status from another application.

Ask yourself what your reaction would be, if you were approached by me (a total stranger) on the street to ask you something without saying "Hello" nor "Thank you"? After several years of services dedicated to the community, I begin to be tired to read requests without any form of politeness.

I was hoping to just tap into the SQL database directly for data export and order updates.  I've got a test instance installed now and I'm starting to investigate.  Again, any insigh would be helpfull.

One of the issues that I see now (and remember from the past) as that I want the store to be pretty seamless with the site.  As I recall, I had problem with that.

However, I'm still not sure the store will have enough options without some serious coding.

Hi Thomas,

It's always the worst idea to read/write directly in tables. This is not related to the Store module nor even to DNN, it's because you don't control the developement. What if, for any reason, I change the something in the db structure? The better way is to use the business layer to get/set data. Normaly each module is build with three parts: the UI layer, the business layer and the data layer. By using the business layer you don't break rules and get/set data safely. Moreover, build a module with just an UI connected to an existing business layer is realy simple. This advice apply to any module, but of course you can do as you like.

The Store module have a powerfull template system and for more than one year is XHTML compliant. The default template can be modified easily, please read the Templating Guide available at Codeplex for details. Each common control uses default DNN CSS classes to be seamless integrated with your skin. Concerning options, I agree than the Store module is not the more complete e-commerce module but it's a good base to start. It depends of your needs.
