Hi Everyone

I didn't know which forum to post this in, so please forgive me if this isn't the right one! I have read the BSD license, and am still a little perplexed at exactly what it entails. So I want to check this. I would like to use DotNetNuke for our company's internet site.

So, my first question is "putting DNN onto the web" is not a form of redistribution, is it?

My second question is related: "Does that mean I need to keep the copyright notice at the bottom of the site, or can I change that to my own? From the showcases they all seemed to have removed it, but I guess I want to check before I use it.

Thirdly and finally, once downloaded, I will be customizing it to suit my business needs. I want to check that someone can't come along and request a copy of my modfied version (as this would expose some of the architectural design and security design around other pieces of software we use.)

Many thanks
Chris Burrell

Q1: you can publish DNN based sites without any limitations

Q2: No, Copyright needs only to stay in the soource code, you can turn off copyright notice (and version info in page title) by unchecking "Show copyright credits" in host settings.

Q3: you can modify the core framework (though I do not recommend to do it due to upgrade problems) and distribute it, but not use the name DotNetNuke for your modification.

I think when people think of open source, they think about the GPL license, which is too restricting IMHO. The best thing about DNN is the BSD license, i think that is really the thriving motor behind the community. If you'd look at the modules sold at snowcovered, you'll find that many of them contain portions of code that originated in the core application or in a core module. The BSD ensures that the developers of those modules are allowed to do that, and also ensures them that nobody will ever demand to give back code to the community in return.
