I am using a win2k3 server, IIS6, SQL Server 2005 Express, DNN 4.0.3 .

I will provide more info if needed.

The following problem arrose while moving to another server.

Some of the images, either being put in a DNN skin or using a Text/HTML module, are only partly showed, and partly broken.

To show what this looks like, I have made 2 screenshots of a non-broken & broken image.

non-broken: http://www.bazarbizar.be/portals/0/afbeeldingen/imgdtx110.jpg
broken: http://www.duotix.be/portals/0/afbeeldingen/temp.jpg
(note: this last is a screenshot, not an actual broken image)

The DNN websites where moved to the new server by copying their DNN directory, and by backing up and restoring the database on the new server.

Some notes:
- the new server is a lot faster than the old one.
- when a broken image is opened in a 3rd party program like Adobe Photoshop, a message saying the image is broken appears (but still opens, showing the anomaly)
- the broken part is always at the bottom of the image, not always (but often) happening on the same images, and sometimes shows shifted colours.

If I clear the cache in the local browser, and refresh the website, the problem is usually gone, only to reappear some hours later.

These problems have never occured on the "old" server, which also had about the same specifications and settings (but with a lesser internet connection).

It is difficult to reproduce the problem, due to the randomness of the problem.

I was thinking it had something to do with the cache settings in IIS. (in the metabase.xml, perhaps)

But then I disabled the Windows Firewall (which was enabled), and the problem disappeared.
After a cache clear and refreshing the browser, the problem didn't come back.

The Firewall has the following services allowed:
- FTP
- RDP traffic (at a 30000+ non-standard port)
- SQL traffic (at a 30000+ non-standard port)
- VNC traffic (at a 30000+ non-standard port)
- Web Server (HTTP), 80
- DNS (UDP), 53

I'm not sure whether this is a specific firewall problem, or a DNN problem.
Has anyone had this before?
I would like to leave my firewall enabled, and prefer not to install a 3rd party firewall without knowing why.

Thank you for reading.

Any helps, hints or tips are greatly appriciated.

I assume, you switched on compression on IIS level without excluding image files

Thank you for your reply.

I've looked around and I don't compression is switched on...

In my IIS properties under the "Service", HTTP compression isn't switched on. (no checkboxes are checked on that tab)

I've looked in the metabase.xml under the IIsCompressionScheme Element, which listed:

  HcFileExtensions="htm
   html
   txt"

Is there any other place compression can be enabled in IIS?

ps:

- I haven't installed any other IIS plugins

- The only webservice "allowed" is ASP.NET v2.0.50727

(The "old" server has the following services allowed: ASP, ASP.NET, Internet Data Connector, Server Side Includes, WebDAV)

The problem still isn't resolved,

I have switched off the firewall atm, and haven't seem the problem anymore.

The moment I turn the windows firewall on again, the problem reappears.

Are you using compression at the DNN level by chance?
