Hello, I wanted to build a singles community using dotnetnuke. I would like to know if it is possible? Is there some sort of dating module for DNN? I have looked online for modules that will add up to a social networking site and I have come up with some that are close, but would need some mods to be perfect. Does anyone have a DNN social networking site or knows of an excellent asp.net solution for a social networking site?

Thanks

Hi,

I highly doubt it would be possible to find a module suite that matched your requirements exactly - I think this is an unrealistic assumption - you are always going to need to tweak modules or write your own module to fill gaps depending on your specific needs. Also consider how much a product suite of modules that could make the next MySpace in 5 minutes would cost...

I run a social networking site for the poker niche called PokerDIY.com
It's a service to find live poker games and players in your area to play against (connecting poker players in other words). It also has League Management (a custom module I am working on) to track scores over games. I use the Smart-Thinker Events module for eInvite capabilities, and the Groups module (based on MySpace Groups) to help users find similar users. I am just about to release a better UserProfile Directory search so users can search on other users and have a templated view of users (like the Group Members in the Groups module)

I am constantly evolving the Smart-Thinker modules to meet my own requirements but I have a long way to go. You might also want to check out something like XMOD to cover the generic requirements.

Some key things that are missing from PokerDIY that a social networking site might have:
  1. A good Google Maps module (been waiting for the core one for almost a year now)
  2. eBay-type user rating system (designing this for my UserProfile module). Users can rate other users and give testimonials in some capacity (in my case as a Player or Game Host)
  3. Photo and Video sharing - thinking about this still - considering doing a YouTube/Flikr integration type module so the data is mastered elsewhere
Let me know how you get on...

I totally agree that there does not seem to be one product that you can load in DNN and have a complete community. Joomla has CB (community builder). It looks like Xmod comes close. However, I could not find any information on whether XMOD has user profile pages. It would be strange if it did not, because it seems to have everything else! Maybe I missed a page, I was up late reading on it. The list of modules I wll need will probably end up being around 400.00. I'm going to hire an experienced dotnetter to do the work. But, I have to decide if it's best to dance around with DNN or simply get a custom website built from scratch. The worry I have with a custom website is your depending on one person to build, test and support your site. If they go AWOL(wich has happened to me), It's going to be difficult to find someone who wants to mess around with the old coder's cooking. I have learned that each coder has their own style. DNN does not immediately give you want you want and it may take several combinations of mods to get the right mix for the site. But, at least it's a common and tested platform.

I'm pretty good with joomla...now. But it's a little slow. Will I see a performance pickup with DNN? That's what I"m hoping for.

Hmmm - I would definitely start off on an established base (DNN was a no-brainer for me as I am a C# developer - there are probably more established open-source platforms but if you are going to get your hands dirty then it helps to know a bit behind the scenes). I love the way I can concentrate on the Smart-Thinker modules and every couple of months the core DNN just gets better and better. It's such a great pluggable architecture so you can work in a fairly isolated environment without damaging anything else.

So... I would either invest some time and money learning an extensible framework like XMOD (and there's a couple others) but at some point you will hit something that has too much business logic (like my League Management on PokerDIY) or some other specific requirement and you will either need a custom module or something designed for the purpose...

I'm not saying DNN is not good, but it's getting better all the time and it seems as though the core are now paying attention to maturing the existing features and improving performance, which is great news.

It also sounds like the core project teams have had a good kick up the butt - some modules have not had an update in almost a year and this was holding DNN back (of course there's others that have been very productive -kudos to them!)

Let me know how you get on, and keep an eye on the Smart-Thinker modules as I am developing purely for a social networking community...

Rodney, i would like to create a community ladder for a game (Worms Armageddon), which users can report/upload game results, and standings/rankings updates automatically

I believe somehow your modules are providing or will provide this features?
