At the moment the game code is not open source.

That is indeed sad. As I would love to modify it and make a D&D type game from it.

There used to be a time when, if you wanted to write a game for your computer, you didn't look for existing code, you started writing code. :-)

This was, I admit, back in the dark ages when OSS meant Office of Strategic Services, not Open Source Software.

Why not just grab Michael Washington's great module development tutorials and start knocking out a game?

Call me radical in thinking but why re-invent the wheel? I know its been awhile since I had a job as a programmer but I doubt things have change so much dev houses today rather start from line 1 then take existing code and modify it. ;)

Yes I could certainly read the docs and try my hand at developing a game from line 1, however it seems counter-productive when 50%+ of the code could be reused as-is as the products are very similar. But when I have the time I'll certainly look into it. But as of now writing something from scratch just isn't in my future.

The key phrase is At the moment

We spent over 6 months developing the game engine from scratch.  We have a few more game themes we are working on for launch in the near future.  Once we recoup our expenses, we will consider releasing the engine as a commercial product.  The engine is fairly complex and there are many parameters that need to be set up and adjusted as well as database table that need to be populated.  There are over 30 modules, more than 20 scheduled task and almost 1000 stored procedures.
