Hello Gurus:

If I have a server running version 3--Can I add a version 4 install on the same server?  My guess is yes, but I would like to benefit from the experience of others.

Please let me know if this is possible and what the tips, tricks, and best practices are.  Thank you.

Regards,

LTM

Definitely yes.  You can run multiple versions of DNN on the same server.  I basically have all versions of DNN on my server for various reasons.  Obviously each one is installed to a separate physical directory, with a separate Web site, and a separate database for each one.  I created a directory and corresponding database following a naming convention like DNN1010, DNN212, DNN321, DNN441.  When you install ASP.Net 2.0 it will add a new tab to the Web Site definition in which you determine the version of ASP.Net the site will use.  Then, in the Web.config, you define the name of the database corresponding the site in question.

It is really easy if you think about it.

Also one thing to note if this is on Windows 2003 server that you must have a separate application pool for each install due to the 1.1 and 2.0 frameworks

Worked like a charm.

One problem though...I can only access the site on the local machine.  Any other computer gives me a 404 and the url is pointing to the localhost.  There seems to be a post-install networking step that is necessary, but I do not know what it is.  Can you help?

I did add a http alias, but that did not work.

You have to make sure that each site has the appropriate Host Header and that the Portal Alias for the site is in agreement with that Host Header.

Like I said before, this works.  But you have to think about each DNN install as a separate Web site.
